The issue of the legality of Kratom across the world is still in the gray.
It was a controversial national debate in the United States until 2016, but today things have become quite clear.
Currently, this medicinal herb is legal in almost every part of the world except the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Rest of the world has accepted kratom as an effective natural remedy and it is being used by the health professionals for the treatment of various conditions, including pain management, anxiety and stress, insomnia, low energy levels, and opiate withdrawal.
What is Kratom?
Kratom is a plant that belongs to the coffee family, Mitragynaspeciosa.
The plant has been used for ages in the traditional medicine system in the countries of its origin.
However, since the last few decades, Kratom’s popularity mushroomed and other parts of the world also starting importing this medicinal herb from Thailand and Malaysia.
Kratom can be chewed in the raw form to gain desired results, but commercially it is available in the form of tinctures, powder and dietary supplements.
It totally depends on the users how they like to consume this medicinal herb.
The issue of regulating Kratom in the U.S
Initially, the Kratom is considered an astounding herb that could deliver instant results and a majority of the population switched to this remedy from pharmacological medicines.
It helped the users to alleviate all sorts of pain, moderate to chronic. It helped them relax and enhance their mood.
Kratom is useful for relieving stress and to overcome depression. It also worked as a stimulant and boosted energy levels in individuals to help them stay active and alert.
It also helped a number of people to treat restlessness and insomnia.
Thus there wasn’t a single reason why people would refuse using this amazing therapeutic plant in their everyday lives.
It prevented them from the chemically modified medications that had underlying side effects and caused more harm than good, in the long run.
But by 2015, the government organizations started observing an increased number of calls to the poison control centers regarding the use of Kratom.
Many cases regarding the abuse of Kratom and addiction were reported and that eventually raised serious concerns.
Although kratom is not a DEA controlled substance, in 2015 the reports of Kratom addiction caused a national concern and the department labeled this herb as a “drug of concern”.
But since it was neither controlled nor banned by the federal government, its use across the United States continued and users deemed Kratom a safer and legal way of getting doped.
Scientific experts started studying the effects of Kratom in their extensive research and they also reported the potential of Kratom as an opioid agonist.
The scientists confirmed that Kratom contained alkaloids, which are mind-altering substances and they have the ability to cause dependency and addiction if used over a long period of time.
Thus in 2016, the DEA decided to list Kratom in the Schedule I Drug category, which contains all the highly addictive, ecstasy producing drugs like heroin, LSD, cocaine etc.
But since the alkaloids in the Kratom, despite being psychoactive, are a powerful tool to help people withdraw from opiate addiction and combat the opiate epidemic throughout the country the DEA withdrew its decision.
Legality of Kratom today in 2017
Today, Kratom is legal in the United States. The federal government has lifted bans on Kratom and it has been allowed by the 48 state governments in America except for Indiana, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.
The health experts have insisted and the government is convinced by the fact that Kratom does not pose any risks to one’s health and it does not harm the users.
The effects of Kratom can be controlled and the chances of Kratom abuse and addiction can be managed and lowered significantly.
Another reason behind lifting the ban from Kratom was the fear of this drug being sold in the black market.
Thus in the United States, Kratom is legal to be used for medicinal purposes but some of the states are still in the process of either banning or regulating this herb.
However, it should be kept in mind that the users in the parts of the country where state governments have banned this drug should strictly refrain from purchasing and consuming.
